Singer KATHARINE MCPHEE and actress ANNA FARIS spent their childhood summers a block away from each other but never actually met until they were movie co-stars.
The pair teamed up for new comedy House Bunny and quickly realised they had a lot in common.
American Idol star MCPhee explains, "Anna is from Edmonds, Washington and my whole family is from there, and so basically I grew up spending my whole summers there, so we were basically neighbours."

A Tahitian cultured pearl consists of thick pearly layers containing organic substances and calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite. Most commonly, these layers are referred to as nacre.

Natural pearls are grown in wild oysters. The process begins when an irritant, such as a grain of sand or a piece of shell, gets inside an oyster's shell. To protect its delicate body from the irritant, the pearl secretes a substance called nacre to surround the irritant. The oyster never stops secreting nacre, so over the years the nacre layers build up into a genuine pearl.

While natural and cultured pearls are extremely similar, you can tell the difference between them with the right equipment. The key difference between natural and cultured pearls lies in the nacre layer. A natural pearl's nacre layer is much thicker than that of a cultured pearl, even when the two have a similar diameter.

Natural pearls are less transparent than cultured pearls. If you place a natural pearl against a dark background—like a box lined in black cloth—and put it under a strong light, the natural pearl will look like a small, white, homogenous ball with no discernible inner rings. When you do the same to a cultured pearl, you will see a thin brown line between the nacre layer and the nucleus of the pearl.

Linnaeus produced the first ‘artificial’ spherical pearls ever cultured in any mollusc, from salt or freshwater, and they now form part of the Linnaean Collections. Linnaeus removed the shells from the river, drilled a small hole in the shell of the freshwater mussel Unio pictorum L. (the “Painter’s Mussel”, so called because artists would use the shallow valves to mix their pigment) and inserted a tiny granule of limestone or plaster between the mantle and the shell. To produce a free pearl rather than a blister pearl he held this small bead away from the shell's inner surface with a "T" shaped silver wire. The pearl mussels were returned to the riverbed for six years and in many cases resulted in pearls of modest quality.

Linnaeus sold the secret to a Swedish merchant called Peter Bagge in 1762 for 6,000 “dalars“ (or approximately £1,250 which would be over £93,000 today). Bagge obtained a monopoly permit from the King of Sweden to develop pearl culture but neither he, nor his grandson, ever took up the idea and put it into practice.

A set of Linnaeus’ experimental pearls has been travelling the world since 2001 as part of the blockbuster exhibition “Pearls” organised and administered by the American Museum of Natural History in New York. They have been exhibited in Abu Dhabi, Australia, Canada, Japan, and The United States. The pearls are back in London for the tercentenary celebrations until October, when they will join the rest of the exhibition in Paris, opening to the public there on October 27, 2007.

THE BEAUTYFULL OCEAN PARK

Papua, BILA Anda penikmat panorama kehidupan bawah laut, coba bandingkan lokasi yang Anda ketahui dengan kawasan laut di Kabupaten Raja Ampat. Kekaguman pasti segera terlontar.

Selain panorama indah di atas permukaan laut, biota di dalam laut pun menjanjikan keindahan. Berbagai jenis ikan bermacam ukuran dan warna hilir mudik tiada henti. Beraneka ragam karang keras dan lunak menambah semarak kehidupan.

Kepulauan Raja Ampat terletak di ujung paling barat Pulau Papua. Akan tetapi, informasi keindahan alam kabupaten ini tidak ditemui dalam buku panduan wisata reguler di Indonesia. Segala cerita dan foto mengenai daerah ini justru berasal dari dunia internet.

Banyak orang asing yang berprofesi sebagai peneliti kehidupan laut, penyelam profesional, fotografer, atau turis biasa membuat situs tentang kehidupan bawah air laut Raja Ampat.

Mereka rata-rata terkesan dengan keindahan alam bawah air Raja Ampat. Dr John Veron, ahli karang berpengalaman dari Australia, misalnya. Dalam sebuah situs ia mengungkapkan, Kepulauan Raja Ampat yang terletak sekitar 50 mil sebelah barat-utara Sorong mempunyai kawasan karang terbaik di Indonesia. Sekitar 450 jenis karang sempat diidentifikasi selama dua pekan penelitian di daerah itu.

Dari 450 jenis karang itu, tujuh jenis di antaranya merupakan temuan baru bagi dunia ilmu pengetahuan karang dan belum pernah ditemukan di dunia lain. "Menemukan karang dalam satu kali kunjungan, belum pernah saya temukan selama hidup. Bahkan, belum ada penelitian karang yang dapat menemukan lebih dari 450 jenis karang," tutur Veron.

Serupa dengan Veron, Gerry Allen, ahli ikan karang dan ikan air tawar yang telah bekerja 25 tahun di seluruh dunia, mengaku belum pernah memiliki pengalaman seperti yang diperolehnya di Kepulauan Raja Ampat. Di sana ia menemukan sejumlah keindahan taman laut yang paling indah dan murni dari seluruh taman laut di Indonesia.

"Unbelievable, luar biasa. Baru kali ini saya berhasil menghitung 283 jenis ikan karang dalam satu kali penyelaman selama 80 menit. Ini adalah rekor tertinggi dalam karier penelitian saya," kata Allen yang telah menulis ratusan buku tentang ikan itu.

Tim ahli dari Conservation International, The Nature Conservancy, dan Lembaga Oseanografi Nasional (LON) Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) pernah melakukan penilaian cepat pada 2001 dan 2002. Hasilnya, mereka mencatat di perairan ini terdapat lebih dari 540 jenis karang keras (75% dari total jenis di dunia), lebih dari 1.000 jenis ikan karang, 700 jenis moluska, dan catatan tertinggi bagi gonodactyloid stomatopod crustaceans.

Angka-angka tersebut melebihi hasil temuan dengan metode yang sama di kawasan Milne Bay (Papua Nugini), Pulau Bunaken, dan Kepulauan Togean.

"Penemuan ini membuktikan dugaan sebelumnya bahwa Raja Ampat menjadi pusat penyebaran karang di dunia," kata Kepala Dinas Perikanan dan Kelautan Kabupaten Raja Ampat J Becky Rahawarin ketika ditemui Media.

Menurut riset yang dilakukan tim ekspedisi Media Indonesia-Metro TV bersama Departemen Perikanan dan Kelautan (DPK) Republik Indonesia, kejernihan air laut secara vertikal mencapai 30 sampai 33 meter. Sedangkan jarak pandang (visibility) secara horizontal sekitar 15 sampai 20 meter pada kedalaman 10 meter. Dan kondisi ini merupakan kondisi lingkungan yang mendukung kehidupan terumbu karang secara optimal. "Hal ini juga sangat baik bagi penyelam untuk menikmati bawah laut Raja Ampat," kata Widodo S Pranowo, peneliti DPK.

Untuk menjaga kelestarian bawah laut Kepulauan Raja Ampat, pemerintah telah menetapkan laut sekitar Waigeo Selatan, yang meliputi pulau-pulau kecil seperti Gam, Mansuar, kelompok Yeben dan kelompok Batang Pele, telah disahkan sebagai Suaka Margasatwa Laut. Menurut SK Menhut No 81/Kpts-II/1993, luas wilayah ini mencapai 60.000 hektare.

Selain itu, beberapa kawasan laut lainnya telah diusulkan untuk menjadi kawasan konservasi. Masing-masing adalah Suaka Margasatwa Laut Pulau Misool Selatan (luas 4.319 ha), laut Pulau Kofiau (7.187 ha), laut Pulau Asia (7.000 ha), laut Pulau Sayang (96.000 ha), dan Laut Pulau Ayau (168.630 ha).

Menurut Becky, usulan kawasan konservasi yang baru ini sedang diproses. "Apabila disetujui, berarti kumulatif luas kawasan konservasi di Kepulauan Raja Ampat berluas 772.608 ha atau 16,75 persen dari total luas Kepulauan Raja Ampat," ujarnya. (Aries Wijaksena/S-4)

Sapphires: beautiful beyond blue

Sapphire is often thought of as being synonymous with the colour blue: you can easily picture sapphire seas. However, sapphire is beautiful beyond blue, in every colour but red, red being the domain of the ruby.

The other colours of sapphire can be just as beautiful and rare - or even rarer - than the blue, but they are usually offered at more modest prices. Yellow, orange, lavender, and other pastel shades are especially affordable.Not realising that ruby and sapphire were actually the same mineral, our ancestors left us with a dilemma: how should pink shades be classified? Long ago, it was decided that all gemstones of the mineral corundum should be referred to as sapphire, except the red colour, which was called ruby. But pink is really just light red. The International Colored Gemstone Association has passed a resolution that the light shades of red should be included in the category ruby, since it is too difficult to legislate where red ends and pink begins. In practice, pink shades are now known either as pink ruby or pink sapphire. Either way, these gems are among the most beautiful of the corundum family.

The most valuable other fancy sapphire is an orange-pink or pinkish-orange variety called 'padparadscha' after the lotus blossom. Padparadscha sapphires are very rare, and the exact definition has always been a matter of debate: different dealers and laboratories around the world disagree on the exact colour denoted by this term. Some dealers even argue that the term should not be limited to the pastel shades of Sri Lankan sapphires, but also include the more fiery shades of reddish-orange from the Umba Valley in Tanzania. Padparadscha sapphires sell at a premium, their prices nearing those obtained for fine blue sapphires. Although the exact description of these rare gemstones is debatable, their beauty, with its delicate blended shades the colour of fresh salmon and sunsets, is not.

Other very popular shades of fancy sapphires are yellows, bright oranges, lavenders and purples, and a bluish green colour.

Generally, the clearer and more vivid the colour, the more valuable the fancy sapphire. If the colour is in the pastel range, the clarity should be good. Because in lighter tones inclusions are more noticeable, the trade usually prefers the gemstones to be cleaner with fewer visible inclusions. In a lighter coloured gemstone, the cut is also more important: it should reflect light back evenly across the face of the stone, making it lively and brilliant. With darker, more intense colours, the cut is not as critical because the colour creates its own impact.

No matter what the colour, sapphires combine durability and beauty for generations of pleasure.

Pekerjaan bodyguard

Moskow:Pekerjaan bodyguard sekarang tidak lagi didominasi kaum laki-laki. Di Moskow, Rusia, profesi itu mulai dilakoni kaum perempuan. Bedanya, pengawal ini tidak bertubuh besar, kekar, dan wajah macho seperti bodyguard laki-laki. Justru wajah cantik berbalut tubuh seksi menjadi ciri dari para bodyguard perempuan ini. Di sudut-sudut liar yang tak bertuan terlihat sang penjajah cinta. Tak peduli laki-laki atau perempuan semuanya menjajahkan cinta. Bagaikan resep makanan istimewa seorang raja. Sejujurnya citarasaku yang diambang batas terkesan angku yang selalu mengajakku memilah diantra yang terbaik. Hanya sebuah nyanyian dan sebuah tarian yang tak berarti. Tanpa musik yang mengiringinya tapi ada makna yang terselubung yang mejadi misteri dari kejadian itu.

Seorang penikmat yang sejati bisa memilih, merasakan dan menikmati. Tak peduli apapun yang di luar atau di dalam dirinya. Entah itu teduh, tenang atau bahkan sesuatu yang bisa menghalangi kehendaknya. Kolektifitas, citarasa dan kenikmatan selalu tersimpan, segar, indah bahkan melebihi kesegaran dan keindahan bunga yang mekar diantara segala bunga yang indah.

Kadang aku diam mengikuti ritme irama sang biduan tapi sesekali tangan ku membantu aku meneguk minuman yang tersimpan dalam pialaku. Ahhh… terkesan angkuh. Suatu expresi yang berlebihan tapi sejujurnya intuisiku mengatakan jangan takut atau minder nikmati saja apa yang tersedia bagimu karena semua orang juga ingin menikmatinya.

Teriakanmu atau suara tangismu sebagai pengaduan dari dirimu tak pernah kudengar. Hanya wajah kesetian yang tulus yang terpancar dalam dirimu dengan balutan wajah polosmu yang lugu. Dengan kesibukan dan keterbasanmu. Seorang wanitah anggun melangka dengan sombong didampingi oleh seorang jejaka yang tampan dan begis merombah dan memilah hasil karyamu. Kutahu karyamu tak seberapa dihargai tapi sesungguhnya engkau telah menciptapakan dan memberikan inspirasi mahakarya yang indah.
